An air conditioner that runs but doesn’t cool is almost always a refrigerant-side problem. Low refrigerant charge from a system leak means the evaporator coil can’t absorb enough heat from the indoor air, so the supply air temperature barely drops. You may notice ice forming on the refrigerant lines or evaporator coil—a telltale sign of low charge or severely restricted airflow. Other causes include a failed compressor that’s running but not pumping, a bad run capacitor preventing the compressor from engaging, or a stuck contactor. Our technicians use electronic leak detection and manifold gauge analysis to pinpoint the root cause before recommending repair.

A buzzing outdoor unit with a stationary fan almost always means the condenser fan motor’s run capacitor has failed or the fan motor itself has burned out. The compressor may still be running (you’ll feel vibration), but without the fan pulling air across the condenser coil, the system can’t reject heat and will overheat and shut down on high-pressure safety. If you hear a single loud click followed by a hum and then nothing, the compressor’s start capacitor or start relay has likely failed, preventing the compressor motor from turning over. An air conditioner that repeatedly trips the breaker is drawing more current than the circuit can handle, which indicates a major electrical or mechanical fault. The most common causes are a compressor that’s locked rotor (the motor is seized and can’t rotate, drawing extremely high amperage), a shorted condenser fan motor winding, or a ground fault in the wiring between the disconnect and the unit. Do not keep resetting the breaker—repeated overcurrent events can overheat wiring and create fire risk.
